Byzantine Hagiography with Virgin Mary Sοumela.
The words 'Virgin Mary Soumela' powerfully confirm the entire Christian history of Pontic Hellenism, highlighting the glory, the joys, the heroic deeds of the Akrites and the Great Komnenian Empire of Trebizond, as well as the legends, the songs and the Levantine dances, the spirit and his heart.
Eleftherios Venizelos carried out actions in 1930 for the transfer of the Icon of the Virgin Mary from Pontus to Greece, and initially (for 20 years) it was hosted in the Byzantine Museum of Athens.
The Pontians wished to find some place rocky and quiet, similar to the one in Pontus, for the construction of the "New" Monastery that would house the icon. Finally, this took place in 1951 in the area of Kastania in Vermio, near Veria in Imathia.
